Zanja Madre: LA’s Original Aqueduct
@CityOfLosAngeles Before the Los Angeles Aqueduct, before Mulholland, and long before imported water transformed the city, Los Angeles depended on a simple earthen ditch known as the Zanja Madre, or Mother Ditch. Built soon after the founding of the pueblo in 1781, the Zanja Madre carried water from the Los Angeles River to the Plaza, homes, vineyards, orchards, and fields of early Los Angeles. For more than a century, this open ditch and the network of zanjas that grew from it served as the city’s first water system. The Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) Level 3 (L3) Nitrogen Dioxide Vertical Column Troposphere layer provides information on the amount of nitrogen dioxide in the troposphere.
